Pat McGraw

Greetings!

If  you have had an uneventful summer, as far a fishing goes, it is time to make some time for Fall fishing.  It seems to come around real fast, once the month of August hits us.

Your TU group slows down a bit also.  We don’t have a July meeting, and instead have a family picnic.  We really had a good turnout and had a lot of fun with good eats and drinks.  Of course this doesn't’t mean that we slow down in getting our meetings organized with guests and the upcoming events that we need to take care of each year.

We did cosponsor two teens for the week-long CTU's Youth Conservation and Fly Fishing Camp, and a two-day Fishing Camp for middle school aged children, both in June. Both events were cosponsored with the local Fountain Creek Water Sentinels/Sierra Club, and we owe Jenny Kedward and Rick Stanton of that group a big vote of thanks for their major contribution to those efforts. Our chapter doesn't have a huge bank account, and the financial aid and dedication of time from the Water Sentinels helps both of our groups' missions with youth education. Come to the September meeting to see presentations about the youth ed programs this summer.

Just a reminder that the October meeting is when we elect new officers and board members.  Of course, we haven’t had any changing of the guard, so to speak, for five years.  We really do need some new faces to get involved with the chapter business that we conduct each year. The same old leaders is not healthy for the group.  One position we haven’t had for over a year is secretary.  If anyone is interested, we would be very appreciative.

We have great guests for the upcoming months, and are always looking for new projects to help our cold water fisheries.  We will be organizing a yearly fund raiser to help with money needed for projects and running of our chapter. If you can help, plan on staffing our booth in Denver during the Fly Fishing Show coming up in January.

Your chapter will be having another river clean-up that you can read about in this newsletter.  This is the clean-up that all TU chapters in the state are getting out to help clean a river.  Read the details and come and join us.

Once again we hope that many of you that have never attended a meeting or an event will find time this next year to drop by and see what we do for the conservation of our rivers.

Projects Report
Ted Sillox

Ted SilloxOur chapter held its August meeting in Trinidad and it was a great success. Several members made the trip from the Pueblo area, including Frank Nemick, Kelvin Melton, Judith and Stephen Stein, Lou McCullough, Pat McGraw, Ted Sillox, Larry Bussey from Collegiate Peaks and Dennis Cook from CTU. Several of our TU members from the La Veta-Trinidad-Ratone area and many new folks that came because of the article in the Trinidad Chronicle were there.

We met at the Trinidad Chamber of Commerce with Kim Pacheco who graciously let us use the building for our meeting. Our chapter organized the meeting and with guidance from Dennis and Larry it was decided that the folks in Trinidad would form a chapter for the area and their Purgatory River project. Our chapter will remain part of this project and at our September meeting I will explain how we will stay involved and help these folks complete this project.

Trinidad Meeting was well attendedWhat makes this so worthwhile is that with a small amount of effort TU can hopefully become a stronger voice in the area and help to further develop the Bosque Del Oso wilderness area above Trinidad. If you have not visited this great area take a drive south this fall and fish this wonderful creek. The scenery including the drive is great and the area is already designated for fly and lures only so you won’t have the large crowds.

Thanks to everyone in the greater Trinidad area who attended and agreed to serve on the board. Folks who are interested in helping with the formation of the chapter or attending meetings can call the new President, Howard Lackey, during business hours at 719-846-9805. It will take dedicated effort to get a new chapter off the ground, and we hope to stay in close touch with those who are working on that chapter formation.

JOIN THE COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE FOR NATIONAL HUNTING & FISHING DAY

All day events will be held in Denver to educate and encourage participation

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will participate in its first-ever National Hunting & Fishing Day by hosting an event on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Denver Headquarters, 6060 Broadway, Denver. The full day event, beginning at 9:00 AM, will be jam-packed with educational seminars and opportunities for newcomers and seasoned recreationists to cast, shoot and learn outdoor skills in a safe and comfortable environment.

"The DOW recognizes the importance of teaching the hunting and angling heritage to new generations of Coloradoans. Our wildlife resource is one of the most treasured in the nation--it's critical that we continue to foster stewardship, conservation, and concern about the future of our animals and fish," said Mark Cousins, Hunter Education Coordinator for DOW.

Experienced anglers and hunters will enjoy an array of presentations from Colorado wildlife experts, ranging in topics from quail hunting to mapping your hunt, fishing hot spots to carp fishing on a fly, with noted author Barry Reynolds. Novices, family, and friends of sportsmen can try their hand at shooting a .22, fly rod casting, or getting a Junior Wildlife Officer badge. Plus, a demonstration of hunting dogs by Pheasants Forever will show everyone how skilled and smart these clever canines are on a hunt!
